Longwall mining damage image of James Kinney Farmstead, showing
frozen temporary water supply livestock tank. The ice is so thick,
that a hammer can sit on top of the ice without falling through.
There is no electricity across the road from the main house as OVCC
has not installed electric lines, therefore the water in the livestock
tank freezes during cold weather. According to ODNR regulations,
OVCC is required to provide water for livestock in areas affected
by longwall mining.
Prior to mining, a constant flow of water from the developed spring
in this field kept the stock tank from freezing during cold weather.
The spring feeding the stock tank in this field previously provided
22 gal/min flow rate prior to mining, now there is no water from
this spring due to longwall mining subsidence.
